Ahhh Sunday. The most relaxing day of the week in my opinion. Oddly enough I used to hate Sundays! They always gave me the worst anxiety and left me stressed for the week ahead. Once I went to college, I began to love Sundays because that was the day everyone would come back to school after the weekend. Sunday became the start to a week filled with classes and fun times with friends. Now that I’m not in college anymore (cue crying), I try to make my Sunday both relaxing and productive as I prepare for the week ahead. I hope you’ll find these tips helpful and that you’ll have a positive start to your week.
1.) Have a nice breakfast: Recently, I started cooking breakfast for my family on Sunday mornings. It’s something my mom always used to do when we were younger and home on Sunday mornings. Whether it’s pancakes or a smoothie, starting your Sunday off with a good breakfast can bring a little extra joy to you and your family’s day. It doesn’t necessarily need to be healthy it just needs to be something that fills your soul with happiness.
2.) Do something you enjoy: This could be anything. Going to a farmers market, heading to the beach or just chilling at home are all great ways to spend your day as long as it’s something you enjoy doing. For me today, that meant staying home, reading a book and hanging out by the pool with my nephew and mom. There’s nothing like spending a day doing exactly what YOU want to be doing. Be sure to be present and really take it all in.
3.) Get outside: I’m writing this in the summer so this one may not apply once the colder months hit but even still, being outdoors does so much good for you. Even if it’s just a five minute walk or sitting in the sun for a bit, nature is a proven mood booster. Look up at the sky. Observe the birds. Realize how small your problems are and how big this world is. Appreciate the beauty around you.
4.) Eat a good dinner: This is similar to the breakfast tip but good food is so important. Sunday is a great opportunity to make something new. I prefer to focus on recipes that are easy and don’t take a lot of time. My mom and I recently made grilled fish and made the best fish tacos. It was the perfect summer meal and an awesome Sunday night dinner that made us feel light and satisfied.
5.) Get active: Get your endorphins pumping even if it’s just a few squats or lunges or maybe just a stretch. Just get your body moving and don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Do enough so that you feel like you’ve accomplished something and try to make it something that is enjoyable. It will help you sleep better and give you some mental clarity.
6.) Chill out: After you get active don’t forget to relax! Take a nap, sit outside, spend some extra time in bed. It’s your day to do exactly as you please.
7.) Talk to loved ones: This is one I always forget to do and I feel so bad about it. I’ve been telling myself to call my grandma every weekend and I never do it. (I know I’m a terrible person). Call your grandparents, call your parents, call your long lost friend. Just speak to someone you love. Especially if you haven’t spoken to them in awhile. It will make both of you feel better and it will put you at ease.
8.) Clean and tidy up: I always find there’s no better feeling than getting in bed on a Sunday night with a clean room, clean sheets and a candle lit. Clean your room or house and organize your space. Sometimes when you clean and tidy up the area you’re living in, you end up feeling like you’ve gained mental clarity as well. Starting out the week with a clean room will also make it easier to keep it that way during the week.
9.) Prepare for the week ahead: Try to iron your clothes ahead of time and pack your lunch for work. Write in your planner and figure out what you would like to accomplish this week. Mentally prepare yourself for the week ahead and go into it with a positive mindset. Be grateful for what you have and stay focused on what you want to achieve. If you’re not in a place you want to be in (trust me, I know the feeling) envision what you want your life to look like. Set yourself up for a good week.
10.) Log off of social media: Ugh, social media. It’s such a great tool but at the same time it can be so toxic! Don’t allow other people’s thoughts and opinions to dictate your actions. If you go on a site and find yourself feeling sad, jealous, envious just get off. Don’t allow someone else to steal your peace. Most importantly, stay present and stay in the moment you’re in.
11.) Read something: Sunday seems to be the only day I have time to read at this point but I’m trying to change that. I prefer reading books that are inspiring and that will help me reach my dreams and goals, but you can read anything you like. The great thing about a book is that you can take it anywhere.
12) Get adequate rest: Lastly end your night by getting in bed and getting a good nights sleep. Set your alarm and set the mood. Meditate or pray if that’s what helps you to relax. Try not to dread the week ahead. I know it’s hard but you’re not doing yourself any favors by dreading the life that awaits you. Think happy thoughts and keep water next to your bed. If you sleep with your significant other give them a good hug before you go to sleep. And NEVER go to bed angry.
